What is the difference between the Basic and Premium Drinking Water Kits?

The difference between the two kits is that the Premium Kit includes a comprehensive analysis of volatile organic compounds that includes regulated compounds, unregulated compounds, and total trihalomethanes.  For only $45 more than the basic kit, this is a great option if you have concerns because your home is near any industries, including chemical or petroleum-type industries.  Some volatile compounds are considered to be carcinogenic (cancer-causing) and these compounds are identified in the complete guide that accompanies your results.

What is included in my kit?

Each kit includes the following:
• Custom sample collection bottles for each test being performed
• Complimentary at-home total coliform test
• Detailed sample collection instructions
• Pre-paid return shipping label

How is this different from the kit you can buy off the shelf at your local hardware store?

Many of the at-home drinking water kits are done by you, using color indicating test strips that just give you a range of results. These can be helpful but are not as accurate as the testing we perform. Our kits are analyzed by our laboratory using EPA approved technology, providing precise parts per billion results. Also, unlike other kits, we do not share your contact information or test results with any outside parties. Our goal is not to sell you a treatment system for your home. Our goal is to provide you with peace of mind regarding your water quality.

How is this kit different from other online kits?

Many online kits can be purchased through other reputable labs that follow similar EPA methods. While we cannot speak on individual companies, a number of them do not offer free return shipping. Each Trace Analytical kit will include a UPS return shipping label, so all you have to do is find your nearest UPS drop site and leave the rest up to us.

Can my results be used for regulatory or real estate purposes?

No, while our results are accurate and analyzed using EPA methodology, there are a number of requirements that cannot be met due to shipping times. Your results are for your peace of mind.

What do I do once I receive my results?

Your results will include a guide with levels of concern that the US EPA has identified and a list of potential health effects for each item we tested for.   If your report indicates an area of concern, reach out to your local health department for guidance.  Trace Analytical does not offer consulting services.  We also encourage you to visit the US EPA’s website (https://www.epa.gov/ground-water-and-drinking-water) for more information regarding safe drinking water.  Trace provides this testing as a first step in evaluating the health of your drinking water.

Can I use this test kit to test something other than my drinking water?

No, these test kits are designed specifically for drinking water testing only.  If we suspect something other than drinking water was submitted, our laboratory will reject the samples without a refund or replacement kit.
